Understanding the RAM in Android

Not long ago, a friend asked me why their X OnePlus was tremendously slow and with a considerable lag. Just see your device, I watched as the ROM installed, after asking him to a popular Chinese website, brought a considerable amount of pre-installed applications. Three of them had been the trigger for slow down your phone: 360 Security, Clean Master and Battery Doctor.

In addition to the aforementioned, the Google Play Store hosts many applications focused on the same thing, to reduce consumption of RAM and save battery life in many ways. In this article I will explain why I do not advise to install these programs on your Android, or up to the top terminals of market will suffer the negative effects of these apps.

Understanding the RAM in Android 1

Understanding the RAM in Android, how it works?

Broadly speaking, the RAM ( or random access memory in English) is a type of incredibly fast storage that disappears when the computer is turned off. Therefore, used to load information in this memory temporarily that is accessed frequently. I.e., if I open Chrome on my mobile, the next time you restart to enter it the app will start instantly and with all the pages you had open so far, since everything is stored in RAM until you close the browser.

In some operating systems such as Windows, the more RAM you have installed better. Why? Because when the memory is filled with all kinds of programs, the system will begin mandatory to use space on your hard disk as virtual RAM, being this much slower and requiring the user to close everything that is not in use or Windows it will start to go really wrong.

This is not so in Android. Google’s platform is designed to deal with the most possible RAM memory, running numerous background processes that enable continuous operation services such as notifications. When we install on our device WhatsApp, Facebook, Hangouts, or Gmail, these always have processes that always run behind the applications, while they are closed and which can not be stopped unless the program is uninstalled.

If you start an app that requires a high consumption of RAM, Android will automatically take care of closing process with low priority (saving a temporary file) to open what the consumer requested. Depending on the version you have, the memory management will be more or less efficient, but this would be the basic operation under which it is structured Android.

Then, why not recommend a RAM and battery optimizer?

All these accelerators of RAM, also known as Task Killer, what they are doing is forcing the closure of the background processes. Due to the nature of Android, the system will return them to immediately start and basically it is as if we had done nothing, everything remains the same.

This if were not enough, It is detrimental to the life of the battery. How? If you are killing processes and services in the background, and Android have to be continuously opening greater CPU usage for these tasks has negative repercussions on your battery.

If add you the large amount of resources consumed all ellastanto at first and second level, your phone will suffer from lags and drops of the performance to a greater or lesser extent, especially if you have installed more than one.

The performance of applications that assure you to prolong your battery is also very similar. In addition to disable system functions or reduce the brightness, also closes the processes that are not in use today, returning to the same vicious cycle that in the former case. There are some interesting shortcuts in these apps or can offer alternative security features but they do not compensate for loss of performance and zero savings-giving.

FAR FROM BEING A SOLUTION, THE SITUATION IS WORSE STILL IN LOW-END DEVICES

Understanding the RAM in Android 3

Therefore, what options I have to optimize performance?

Now that you know why you must not install battery and RAM optimizers, I will give you some tips so that you mejoréis the performance of your Android in the best possible way.

  • Hibernates background applications: Alternatives such as Greenify, allow us to Hibernate applications that we use less. What is it that makes? Frozen processes and services in the background of the programme and thus improves both battery and RAM. Whenever we open the Hibernate JPA will start from scratch.
  • Using lighter alternatives: The official applications from Facebook or Twitter, for example, weigh a lot and hinder the performance especially in low-end terminals. Install much lighter alternative clients is beneficial from the first minute; also happens with Chrome or Skype for giving you more models.
  • Clean the cache: The cache memory is the space reserved where you store temporary files of the applications, taking in the majority of cases up to several GB. Unlike RAM, Android does not only, by which any application that you install will be reserved a space in the cache. With the passage of time, it is recommended to clean it, going to settings, storage and cached data.
  • Turns off unnecessary features: If you don’t have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the location, it is best to keep them off not to unnecessarily consume energy. The same goes for the brightness or the NFC, all coming at the end of the day with sufficient battery.

And you readers, do you use Clean Master, Battery Saver or derivatives on your Android? Do you have an opinion in favour of these tools?
