Meaning of Bandwidth

Meaning of Bandwidth

The concept of bandwidth became popular in the last decades after the mass use of the Internet. In computing, bandwidth is the amount of data that can be sent and received in the context of a communication. This bandwidth is usually expressed in bits per second or in multiples of this unit.

Bandwidth is generally understood as a range for transferring data. The notion is often used with reference to the data transfer rate that is achieved in a communicative way.

In the same way, we cannot ignore what is also called network bandwidth or digital bandwidth.

Bandwidth on an Internet connection can be linked to its speed. Suppose a company offers a bandwidth of 100 Mbit / s. This means that your network allows you to transfer (send / receive) up to 100 Mbit per second. In other words, in one second, it is possible to achieve the transfer of 100 Mbit. As it can be lower, the higher the bandwidth, it will be possible to transfer more data per second and, therefore, the connection will have a higher speed.

In addition to everything indicated, there is another important series of data to consider about what bandwidth is and what it means. Specifically, among them the following stand out:
-On occasions, we come across the fact that it is determined that a program is going to put a “brake” on the bandwidth that it consumes. What this means is that it will limit the megabits per second that it will proceed to transmit. It will be carried out with the clear objective that this program does not use the available width so that other programs are not affected. That is, so that there are no problems among the existing ones and that everyone can use the megabits.
-Depending on the type of connection you have, the bandwidth will be greater or less. In this case, it can be established, for example, that with a telephone modem it will be 56 kbits / second while with Ethernet it can reach 10 Mbits / second.
-When hiring a bandwidth service, it may happen that it is determined that you are going to be able to enjoy a specific one, but then, in reality, its “dimensions” are not the real ones. Therefore, a good alternative to check if that width is the one that has been contracted is to resort to different specific websites that are in charge of measuring it.

The idea of bandwidth also appears in hosting or web hosting services. Companies typically allow a certain amount of data transferred to or from a website monthly. This measure is the bandwidth.

If we focus on analog (i.e. non-digital) signals, bandwidth is the length that exists between the frequencies where the highest signal power is concentrated.
