Apple Wins or Apple Loses, Really Only Can Get One?

One of the great debates that are generated around the technology business is about who is winning and who is losing. Seems to not support media terms and It tends to be polarized between a single winner and several losers. Depends on who ask, can tell you that Apple wins and that Google, Samsung and Microsoft lost, particularly the latter.

That Google wins because Apple loses and Microsoft has been exceeded. That Microsoft is ready for an imminent return because the other three have fallen asleep on its laurels. That Samsung is putting wax Apple and Microsoft at the same time. Is this true? Is there any basis of economic or common sense that supports these claims today?

I win, you lose

There is a wrong perception that the economy is a zero-sum game where what some win, others lose. That everything I get is because I removed it to you. This concept is closely linked to the term mercantilism, according to the RAE:

Economic system that caters primarily to the development of trade, mainly to the export, and considers the possession of precious metals as a characteristic sign of wealth.

Through this Prism, the economies of the countries was during the 16th to 18th century as if it were a poker game: each player tabs go hand in hand according to the skill of each. Similarly, the wealth of each country It is measured according to the amount of precious metals (gold and silver) who had in his possession, having two ways to increase it:

  • Trade, exporting more than it imports. If you sell much abroad, goods are exchanged for precious metals and the wealth of the country is increased.
  • Attacking the neighboring country to plunder their gold and silver and protecting the territory from external invasions.

This perception that it was only possible to increase wealth by removing the neighbor (peaceful or military), seems to reach our days and is installed directly on the technology industry. Involves the big as Microsoft, Samsung, Google, and how not, Apple.

Rethinking winners and losers

And if all of that is that it is not so? Is it possible that Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung win at the same time and that they coexist in relative “peace”? That is no longer necessary so that Apple wins, others have to lose (and vice versa)? I believe that Yes, in fact, has long been well.

If we look at the various businesses, we will see that they are not 100% incompatible each other:

  • Apple is a vertical business that is almost impossible to replicate a similar scale. Its main strength lies in the attractiveness of your garden fence in the eyes of its users.
  • Google has a universal and ubiquitous character that aspires to be everywhere and on all platforms, both iOS and Android, and Windows Phone, not to mention the mobile PC and tablet. Where the user is there will be Google.
  • Microsoft seems to Google in the horizontal and agnostic character in terms of the platform. The new CEO seems to have regained the essence of Microsoft by having presence beyond its own platform. Sounds you Office for iPad?
  • Samsung is a chaebol, or Korean conglomerate which also follows a vertical scheme but that pretends to have a product for every public and Pocket.

Each one has its strengths and weaknesses. Will some better than others and they will win money, sometimes more and sometimes less. The rivalry is most intense between businesses of the same type, the vertical like Apple and Samsung or the horizontal such as Google and Microsoft, but that does not mean that one must disappear so that the other succeed. This is not like the film of Los Inmortales where can be one.

The technology industry (and any sector) makes time that ceased to be a cake which always has the same size. Changes the size of quarter-to-quarter, year after year and that It means that there may be site for all those who strive to achieve a bit. Can Apple to beat all records when it unveils its quarterly results, but that doesn’t mean that Google and company have them to go wrong, don’t you think?
